Evolution of Brill waves with an adaptive pseudospectral method

چکیده
As a first application of the new adaptive mesh functionality pseudospectral numerical relativity code bamps, we evolve twist-free, axisymmetric gravitational waves close to threshold collapse. We consider six different one-parameter families Brill wave initial data; two centered and four off-centered families. Of these latter have not been treated before. Within each family, tune parameter towards black hole formation. The results for data agree with earlier work. Our key are first, that collapse global peak in curvature appears on symmetry axis but away from origin, indicating limit they will around disjoint centers. This is confirmed three by explicitly finding apparent horizons large peaks. Second, find evidence neither strict discrete-self-similarity nor universal power-law scaling quantities. Finally, as Ledvinka Khirnov's recent study, approximately strong features. These features appear multiple times within individual spacetimes furthermore present all

Brill waves
Brill waves are the simplest (non-trivial) solutions to the vacuum constraints of general relativity. They are also rich enough in structure to allow us believe that they capture, at least in part, the generic properties of solutions of the Einstein equations. As such, they deserve the closest attention. This article illustrates this point by showing how Brill waves can be used to investigate t...
متن کاملAn adaptive pseudospectral method for wave packet dynamics.
We solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for molecular dynamics using a pseudospectral method with global, exponentially decaying, Hagedorn basis functions. The approximation properties of the Hagedorn basis depend strongly on the scaling of the spatial coordinates. Using results from control theory we develop a time-dependent scaling which adaptively matches the basis to the wave packe...
متن کاملCorvino’s construction using Brill waves
For two-black-hole time-symmetric initial data we consider the Corvino construction of gluing an exact Schwarzschild end. We propose to do this by using Brill waves. We address the question of whether this method can be used to reduce the overall energy, which seems to relate to the question of whether it can reduce the amount of ‘spurious’ gravitational radiation. We find a positve answer at f...
متن کاملAdaptive Smolyak Pseudospectral Approximations
Polynomial approximations of computationally intensive models are central to uncertainty quantification. This paper describes an adaptive method for nonintrusive pseudospectral approximation, based on Smolyak’s algorithm with generalized sparse grids. We rigorously analyze and extend the nonadaptive method proposed in [P. G. Constantine, M. S. Eldred, and E. T. Phipps, Comput. Methods Appl. Mec...
متن کاملConstrained evolution in axisymmetry and the gravitational collapse of prolate Brill waves
This paper is concerned with the Einstein equations in axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes. We consider numerical evolution schemes that solve the constraint equations as well as elliptic gauge conditions at each time step. We examine two such schemes that have been proposed in the literature and show that some of their elliptic equations are indefinite, thus potentially admitting nonunique solution...
